Who knew Katie Couric was such a prankster? Last night she was a guest on The Late Late Show, but before sitting down with new host James Corden she pulled an April Fools’ Day joke for the television ages.

Here’s the scene: Corden introduces Couric, and the camera cuts to the top of the steps where guests enter (treacherous BTW). But when the curtain pulls back to shine the spotlight on Couric, she accidentally trips and tumbles all the way to the bottom of the stairs. A few audience members unsuccessfully try to stop her fall, and Corden runs across the studio to help, cursing and looking so distraught we actually just want to give him a hug and tell him everything is ok. That’s when he realizes the woman who fell was actually a stunt double and Couric is still safe at the top of the stairs. APRIL FOOLS!

Even knowing it’s a prank, my heart stopped when she fell! The entire studio goes silent, and Corden (who rushes right in to help her) is so totally horrified that you immediately feel for him. But he’s also such a great sport about it when he discovers the truth.

Check it out for yourself. It’s hilarious and heart-stopping — the perfect April Fools’ combination.
