The Grammys were last night, and while Sam Smith was this year’s music darling, someone else actually stole the show. Leave it to music genius and mogul Kanye West, to leave us in stitches — actually, let’s be honest, that is kind of new territory for Ye.

If you remember back to the 2009 MTV Music Video Awards, Taylor Swift won Best Female Video, and Kanye was NOT having it. Taylor took the stage, gushing about winning, but Kanye needed to say a few things, too. He thought Beyoncé should have taken home the Moonman. He stormed the stage to recite his now poetic interruption: “Imma let you finish . . . “ before abandoning the stage, leaving everyone shocked and confused. That’s the back story to what when down at the Grammys this year.

Beck took home the award for Album of the Year, and Kanye thought it should have gone to Beyoncé — again. Kanye honestly might be a bigger Queen B devotee than all of us combined. As soon as Beck’s name was announced, he made his way to the stage. Moments later, Kanye made his way through the crowd, too. Kanye approached Beck, ready to grab the mic, ready to declare his love for Bey again — but then at the last second stopped, shook his head and WALKED AWAY. It was EPIC.

The best part is that no one in the audience knew what to do as it happened, especially Beyoncé and Jay-Z. Please study Jay-Z’s little head shake like, “oh no, not again.” And Bey quietly begging form the audience for it NOT to happen.

Also the relief in the room when they realize Kanye was joking is 100% palpable. Here’s the Bey and Jay laugh at the moment of realization:

While this was clearly one of the highlights from the telecast, Kanye claims it wasn’t all a joke. He talked to E! after the show and commented that, “Beck needs to respect real artistry and give his award to Beyoncé.” And he totally would have said something on stage, but “I got my wife, I got my daughter, and I got my clothing line so I’m not going to do nothing to put my daughter at risk, but I am here to fight for creativity. That’s the reason why I didn’t say anything tonight.”

He also mentioned he was a little tipsy, too. So whether it was all a big ha-ha joke, or he really does want every award to go to Beyoncé remains to be seen.

All this Ye/Bey fanfare actually had Kanye stealing the spotlight from himself. No one is talking about his awesome performance of “Only One” — the first time he’s performed at the Grammys in six years. Or his “FourFiveSeconds” performance with Paul McCartney and Rihanna.

So yea, there were some beautiful musical moments but as per usual Kanye outshone Kanye. Guess we’ll see you front row at the next Beyoncè world tour, Yeezy.
