Jimmy Kimmel opened up about what *really* happened at the Oscars, and it seems that Denzel Washington saved the day
We can’t imagine how stressful Sunday night’s (February 26th) Oscar mishap must have been for host Jimmy Kimmel, and now he’s spoken about what happened for the first time.
In case you missed it, the finale of the Academy Awards saw La La Land be accidentally given the award for Best Picture. Things got hella confusing, as it became apparent that, in fact, Moonlight had scooped the prestigious award. How did it all happen? Well, it’s assumed that there was a mix up with the envelopes, with the announcers, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, being handed a duplicate envelope for Best Actress.
Well, now Jimmy Kimmel, who hosted the Oscars, has given his account of what happened, and it seems that Denzel Washington helped saved the day.
Speaking during his late night show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the talk show host spilled about how he felt “like an idiot” and it all sounds pretty hectic, tbh.
Jimmy spoke about that given that it was the 50th anniversary of Bonnie and Clyde, Beatty and Dunaway were picked to announce the winner for Best Picture. However, the pair were handed the wrong envelope, and that’s when things got complicated.
Noting that Beatty passed on the snafu to Dunaway, Kimmel said, “[Beatty] was confused, so he let her read the winner. In other words, Clyde threw Bonnie under the bus. I have to be honest … it’s one of the slickest moves I’ve ever seen.”
Explaining how he heard the stage manager say that the wrong movie had been announced as the winner, Jimmy said that there was mayhem on stage.
It wasn’t until the hero of the hour, Denzel Washington, caught Jimmy Kimmel’s attention and directed it to Barry Jenkins, the director of Moonlight that he realized that he was still hosting.
Jimmy went on to say that he had to deny that it was him who had pranked the winners.
“[T]rust me, if I had pulled a prank in that situation, I wouldn’t have just had the wrong winner’s name in the envelope when they opened it,” he said. “There would have been a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon inside. It was not a prank.”
Finally, he added: “Faye Dunaway, she made quite a getaway. She read the wrong name and split. She got the hell out of there.”
