The 'Jem and the Holograms' trailer is here—and it's way different from the cartoon
Quick, grab your pink studded jacket and paint a star on your face because the new trailer for Jem and the Holograms is here and it’s time to get down to business. While it might not have the same ’80s campy feel of the cartoon, or even the same story, we’ve still got the same band — Jem, Kimber, Aja and Shana are here to rock.
What the trailer sets up is a brand new story for Jem: Jerrica is just a normal girl, but after her sister (Kimber) uploads a video of her singing to YouTube she becomes a viral sensation. Soon, it’s off to Hollywood to sign a record deal and undergo a complete “Jerrica” to “Jem” makeover. It’s hard not to laugh and be like ugh that is so true when their Starlight Music manager, Erica Raymond tells them that their newest poster isn’t them, “it’s Photoshop.”
But what about the holographic machine that turns Jerrica into Jem in the cartoons? What about Synergy?? While it looks like the movie has ditched the “Jerrica transforms into Jem, the rock star, via hologram” plot, she still rubs her earrings and whispers, “showtime, Synergy.” Her actual hologram might be gone, but it’s not forgotten.
One more question: will Jem be kicking actual butt at any point? She used to in the cartoon, but the movie Jem, played by the lovely Aubrey Peeples, appears to be a little more emo and introspective than her cartoon counterpart. Hey, she’s only human. More humans to spot in the trailer: real life actors-turn-musical goddesses Juliette Lewis and Molly Ringwald (as Jem and Kimber’s aunt, Mrs. Bailey).
Check out the brand new girl-power trailer below, and maybe the wait for its release on October 23 won’t be so long?
