Fans of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series will be pleased to know that George R. R. Martin has announced that a book about Westeros will be released next year. But it might not be The Winds of Winter.

If you’ve been keeping up with the book series that inspired the hit HBO show Game of Thrones, then you’ll know fans have been waiting a long time for Martin to release the sixth installment, The Winds of Winter.

The last novel in the series, A Dance with Dragons, was published back in 2011, and since then the plot of the TV show has outpaced the books, potentially spoiling rather large bits of information (although the show and the books may just have different plots).

Despite this, it seems that the sixth book in the series is still a while off, with various release dates being touted but nothing ever materializing.

However, George R. R. Martin has revealed that a new book set in Westeros will be out next year.

While Martin has previously said that The Winds of Winter would be out this year, in a new post on his Live Journal page, the author indicated that he would be releasing a Westeros-based book in 2018.

The first part of Fire and Blood, a written history of House Targaryen, would likely be released in 2018 or early 2019. He then addressed the White Walker-shaped elephant in the room — The Winds of Winter.

“I am still working on it, I am still months away (how many? good question), I still have good days and bad days, and that’s all I care to say,” he wrote.

Okay, so while Martin didn’t necessarily confirm that The Winds of Winter was coming next year, it does sound like work on the anticipated novel is being done, and we can hope that next year delivers the novel.

Until then, we’re pretty content with the seventh season of Game of Thrones, which, only two episodes in, has been delivering some pretty great moments.
