The "Game of Thrones" showrunners teased that a spinoff could be a possibility
This week has been chockablock with news from Westeros, and now the showrunners have teased that a Game of Thrones spinoff could be a possibility, and it’s the greatest news since Jon Snow came back from the dead.
Currently, the showrunners and some of Game of Thrones castare in Austin, Texas, at SXSW festival, where they’ve been dropping hints, tidbits, and info about what to expect from the remaining two seasons. Not only has it been confirmed that the final eighth season will only be six episodes long (😩), but it’s also been teased that Sansa Stark might be in trouble going forward (Noooooo).
Well, being the teases that they are, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss spoke about the possibility of a sequel series to Game of Thrones, and we have some questions.
Of course, this isn’t the first time that rumors of a Game of Thrones spinoff have been mentioned. In July of last year, the showrunners spoke about expanding on the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire series, George R.R. Martin’s, world, something that they later echoed in September. Then, in November there were rumors of a possible prequel series, too.
Both Benioff and Weiss did say, however, that if there were to be a spinoff they wouldn’t be attached to the project.
“I think it’ll be great, but I think it’s better for them to get new blood in with new visions,” Benioff said.
We now have A LOT of questions. Given how popular Game of Thrones is, it would make sense that HBO would want to continue and expand on the universe created by George R.R. Martin. Tbh, a spinoff could take any shape, and that’s also super exciting, too. Whether it’s a prequel, sequel, or something just set in the same universe, more trips to Westeros are a-okay with us.
