Board game fans can vote on new Monopoly pieces, and there are some VERY interesting options
Monopoly is a classic board game with a real estate theme, and it’s been around for 81 years. And so have most of the Monopoly tokens. But now, Hasbro has announced that fans get to vote on some new Monopoly tokens. Over the last two years, board game sales have increased — last year, sales climbed 20%, which is pretty huge in the age of video games and other more high-tech forms of entertainment. So Monopoly wants to capitalize with a token makeover, and we can all vote on the new pieces.
If you need a refresher, here are the 8 tokens currently available in a game of Monopoly.
The battleship, boot, car, hat, scottie, thimble, and wheelbarrow have all been staples for as long as we can remember. And the cat token replaced the iron in 2013.
But now, they’re going all in, letting users choose 8 pieces from a selection of more than 5o options.
Users can still vote for all the current tokens, like the dog, the show, or the thimble. But there’s also a whole group of more modern tokens. They include a hashtag symbol, several emojis, a jet ski, and a rubber ducky. We love that Hasbro embraces some playfulness with their new tokens, and we’re pretty sure everyone will be fighting over who gets to play with the kissy face.
Voting is open from January 10th (today!) until January 31st, and you can vote at www.VoteMonopoly.com.
According to Hasbro, the 8 fan-selected tokens will appear in the new Monopoly edition released this fall.
And they’ll announce the results on World Monopoly Day on March 19th.
Given our options, these are the eight tokens we would choose for the new game:
That’s right, we just couldn’t bear to see the adorable original Scottie go! Make sure to head to the website and cast your vote. We can’t yet to see who will be marching toward Broadway in the new Monopoly this fall.
