Over the last week the world has become overrun by tiny but totally cute animals taking over people’s smartphones. No, we’re not talking about the latest cat Vines, but Pokémon GO, the new mobile app by Nintendo that allows YOU to become a real life Pokémon trainer.

The game uses augmented reality and GPS, allowing users to hunt for Pokémon IRL. It’s basically all your childhood dreams of becoming a legit Pokémaster all rolled into one app that you can download on your phone and take with you wherever you go. And, despite only being released a few days ago, the app is already a massive part of people’s lives.

The game has already been the subject of many news stories. The O’Fallon Police Department in Missouri released a press release that claimed the game was encouraging robberies, with criminals luring victims to ‘PokeStops’ before robbing them at gun point. Yet not all reports have been negative. In fact, some people are sharing stories on Tumblr and Twitter saying that the game has helped them deal with various mental health problems and has encouraged them to get out the house.

Like the original Gameboy games, users can pick between Squirtle, Charmander or Bulbasaur as their starting creature. However, if you’re a big fan of the TV show, you’ll know that the OG Pokémon is Pikachu, and now the guys over at Polygon have created a walkthrough tutorial on how exactly you can start the game with the yellow-haired critter.

As is the nature of the game, you’ll need to pop on your best walking shoes and get hunting as you need to go out and about to find one, but once you do you can start your journey onto Pokémon greatness.
