After all this time, the Mamma Mia! movie is finally getting a sequel — and the entire original cast will be involved. Everyone is on board, including Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Christine Baranski.
We know what you’re thinking — will ABBA be involved, too? Yes! According to Variety, the sequel will feature some ABBA songs not used in the 2008 film, and the band will also reprise some “favorites.” Not only that, but all of the original producers, including Judy Craymor, who is the creator of the stage version of Mamma Mia!, have also signed on, so this is going to be HUGE. There’s no word about the plot yet, but it will be set on a Greek island again.
The sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, will be released in June 2018, 10 whole years after the original film. It’s more than a little surprising to think a sequel hasn’t already been made, since the first Mamma Mia! made more than $600 million at the box office worldwide.
The cast will likely be happy to be reunited. Back in 2008, Mamma Mia! was Seyfried’s first big role, which is almost unbelievable now. She said at the time, “The idea of working with Meryl Streep was daunting for about three minutes, but she’s such a cool lady and so professional that she was great to work with. But nothing in the film was really that challenging as I was basically playing myself.”
For the Mamma Mia! sequel, she’ll be a total pro.
Seyfried was recently spotted in Cannes on the red carpet, one of her first major appearances after giving birth to her daughter two months ago. In an interview with James Corden before the baby was born, her husband, Thomas Sadoski said of fatherhood, “I’m more excited about this than I’ve ever been about anything in my life. And I’m also more terrified about it than anything I’ve ever been in my entire [life.]”
Hopefully, she’ll get some solid quality time with her daughter and husband before packing up to Greece to make the Mamma Mia! sequel. We’re all about family time, but we really want to see that movie.
