A statement released by a representative for George Michael shared the devastating news announcing that the singer had passed away peacefully at his home, with the New York Times reporting that his death was “unexpected, but not suspicious.”

Sharing the message on Instagram alongside a picture of the late singer, Spears said that she had been thinking a lot about Michael and the “positive effect he’s had on this world.”
"He was a brilliant artist, talented songwriter, inspiring performer, and did amazing things for the LGBTQ community. He will be missed, but his kind soul will never be forgotten."
Britney’s touching message comes following a fake reports that she herself had died. According to a tweet sent out by Sony Music’s Twitter account, it was announced that Britney had also passed away. This was, in fact, not that case. However, that didn’t stop the hoax from spreading across the internet.
Indeed, it appears that that Sony Music Twitter account was hacked, and Britney put the rumors to bed by posting these goofy selfies.
On Tuesday (December 27th), George Michael’s family released a statement thanking people for their messages of support, their kind tributes, and for sharing his music on social media.
"For someone whose life was ultimately about his music and the love he had for his family and friends, his fans and the world at large, there could be no more fitting tribute,” a publicist said. "From the bottom of our hearts we thank those who, rightly, have chosen to celebrate his life and legacy at this most distressing of times."
