We have a giant soft spot for animals of all kinds, both real and animated. In particular, we can’t get enough of koalas; partly because they come from our top vacation destination, the land Down Under, and partly because they look like real-life teddy bears. In our endless pursuit for total cuteness, we recently we came across a special koala named Bowie, who was scooped up by the Australia Zoo Rescue Unit after being hit by a car.
Luckily, Bowie escaped with only minor bruising. It was during her examination that zookeepers discovered that she has a rare genetic condition called heterochromia, meaning that her eyes are two different colors.
Bowie’s right eye is an eye-popping blue, while her left eye is more of a chocolate brown. As you can see, it’s striking (and not unlike the piercing stare of the late great David Bowie).
The good thing is that Bowie’s vision is not affected by her different colored eyes. “In fact, her eyesight is great, exactly what we like to see in a young koala,” Bowie’s vet, Dr. Sharon Griffiths, says.
Once Bowie is fully recovered, the plan is to release her back into the wild with her koala friends, who are hopefully just as cute as she is. Enjoy your daily cute, because we know we did.
