This morning I went to Google to look up the first of the seven million things I will search on the Internet today, when I was struck by the fairy-tale beauty of today’s Google Doodle:
So of course, my first search of the day ended up being “Google Doodle Sleeping Beauty” because I needed to know the meaning of this magic!
As it turns out, today is the 388th birthday of Charles Perrault, the “father of the modern fairy tale.” Perrault is responsible for writing fairy tales like “Sleeping Beauty,” “Cinderella,” and “Little Red Riding Hood.” Versions of these stories existed before, yes, but Perrault, pulled a Shakespeare and gave us the versions we know/love today.
Here are the other two doodles based on Perrault’s stories, “Sleeping Beauty” and “Puss in Boots,” illustrated by today’s artist, Sophie Diao, a Google employee whose Tumblr is a straight-up wonderland:
Fingers crossed we’ll get more Google gorgeousness for Perrault’s 389th.
