One book is Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of the Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley.
This novel begins two years before Belle even meets the Beast. Some readers love this new backstory, while others don’t like that it only includes a small portion of the actual romance involved between Beauty and the Beast.
Another is Of Beast and Beauty by Stacey Jay.
This book completely alters everything that we know about the classic characters. Belle’s name is Princess Isra, and she is raised for human sacrifice to save her city. Sounds pretty morbid, huh? No matter what the characters’ names are, Isra and the Beast fight for love at the end.
A third adaptation is Beastly by Alex Flinn.
This novel sets the familiar story in modern-day New York, and is told from the point of view of the Beast. It was also made into a 2011 movie starring Vanessa Hudgens, Alex Pettyfer, and Mary-Kate Olsen.
Beauty and the Beast is a unique fairy tale. The relationship begins as a friendship and results in a romance and a deeper love. Beauty and the Beast is a common source for adaptation and revision. People can’t seem to get enough of the fairy tale, which is why we can see it reflected in many movies, TV shows, and books. Our fascination with Beauty and the Beast proves romance is alive and well.
