If you haven’t already listened to Blood Orange, we urge you to get on it. Devonté Hynes, the man behind the music, makes work not just gorgeous in terms of sound. This care extends to his visual aesthetics. Hynes consistently centers women and other femme folks, and his latest video continues that trend.

Hynes created a short film based on three songs from his 2016 album Freetown Sound: “With Him,” “Best To You,” and “Better Numb.” The thread throughout all three is the image of Hynes running — from, toward, to. Another common thread: Actress and activist Amandla Stenberg, who appears improvising and performing on the piano and on the violin.

Hynes is an avid collaborator with women, and he doesn’t slow that roll in this film. “Best Of You” guest vocalist Empress Of, who makes gorgeous rippling pop music, makes an appearance. She graces the middle section of the nine-minute long film, singing and serving a visual and sonic break.

Blood Orange previously dropped a dance break video for his Carly Rae Jepsen collab, “Better Than Me.” And here, there’s dancing too. Right at the end, with just Hynes and his meticulous, masterful stage.
