Since its debut earlier this year, Spike TV’s Lip Sync Battle has brought us endless hours of entertainment. Whether it’s Broad City‘s Abby Jacobsen and Ilana Glazer duking it out to Digital Underground and the Weather Girls; or Anne Hathaway’s killer rendition of “Wrecking Ball” versus Emily Blunt’s badass ode to “No Diggity”; the show is solid gold, and has never failed to deliver.
There’s nothing quite like watching our favorite celebs fake-break it down to famous tunes, but nothing — and I mean nothing — could prepare us for what’s coming in 2016. According to EW, goddess Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is slated to battle the beloved Channing Tatum next season. And we are freaking out.
Even if you aren’t the biggest fan of either (which, you know, that’s just like, your opinion, man), you have to admit that this is a pretty incredible pairing. The match-up is guaranteed to be epic, and we’re already dreaming up what songs the two will pick to sing. Will Beyoncé tackle a Jay Z classic? Will Tatum do Ginuwine’s “Pony,” complete with Magic Mike dance moves? We can only hope.
Before we get too excited, however, there does seem to be some conflicting news: According to Buzzfeed, Channing Tatum is actually slated to battle his wife, Jenna Dewan Tatum, with Bey serving as his back-up while he lip-syncs one of her songs. If that’s the case, what will likely happen is that Beyoncé will sing Tatum’s choice of song live, while he lip-syncs over her. We’re still holding out hope that it’ll be Bey vs. Tatum — but either way, it’s awesome to hear both will be making an appearance.
After all, we can think of few people that would be a better fit for the show than Tatum. He’s an underrated comedy goldmine, he isn’t afraid to poke fun of himself, and he’s an unbelievably talented dancer — essentially, the formula for a great lip-syncing performance.
On the other hand, Bey is a notoriously private woman with an incredibly curated life. That she would grace us with some lip-sync silliness would be a dream come true for the BeyHive. Everyone knows Bey can belt a tune — but lip-syncing is another skill entirely, and the world is ready to see her slay. (To put it into context, the last time Beyoncé was accused of lip-syncing, she totally shut down the rumors with an unbelievable rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. So.)
There’s no word yet on when exactly this mysterious (and guaranteed amazing) episode will air, but Lip Sync Battle returns for its second season next year.
