It was just announced that the first ever Hello Kitty Con is coming to Los Angeles in the fall of this year! I was never into Hello Kitty, but this is still a pretty exciting development for a ton of Hello Kitty fans. Sure you can probably get Hello Kitty stuff at other conventions but the point of fandom-specific cons is this is where EVERYONE is. Your People, you know?
One of the best examples of this, I think, is the documentary on Bronies called, fittingly, Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of the My Little Pony. (First of all, it’s a great movie if you haven’t seen it and it’s on Netflix!) They started having their own cons back in 2011 and I think it really helps solidify the fandom. Sure, you always have tumblr and forums and things but seeing other people who are as obsessed as you in the flesh is always fun. It’s the same way I felt when I started going to The Simpsons trivia nights in New York. It’s just nice! So it made me think, what other fandoms should have their own cons and, of course, what awesome cosplay opportunities you could have!
The intro to this is of course the amazing Funny or Die video Joshua Jackson did about having PaceyCon held outside San Diego Comic Con. If that just existed, just Joshua Jackson holding signs, wearing Pacey shirts and talking to me, I’d go.
And I think most Dawson’s Creek fans would go as well.
Other fun things we could do would be naming boats True Love, doing our best Joey Potter impressions (it’s a lot of parting your hair in the middle, tucking your hair behind your ears and looking down then looking up) and just singing Paula Cole on loop.
2. Bob’s Burgers
Bob’s Burgers has quickly become The Show I Put On When I Don’t Know What I Feel Like Watching. Other shows like that have been Friends and 30 Rock and The Simpsons.
I’ve already been Louise for Halloween, back in 2011, so I have a costume all sorted…
And, same as before I’ve seen some GREAT costumes online from other people. And I don’t think you have to look farther than our own Martiza Lugo’s fanart to know that there would be some KILLER art for sale at a Bob’s Burgers Con.
Plus, with the comic series coming out in August, I think we’re all ready for a Con.
I’ll start writing some Tina-style erotic friend fiction in the meantime.
I got excited just thinking about planning this. First of all, I call cosplaying as Phoebe. It’d be so fun to get crazy prints and huge plastic earrings like those airplane ones she wears in Vegas.
Then obviously there’d be a replica Central Perk where you could have giant lattes, a photo booth with Marcel the monkey and DEFINITELY a Friends trivia contest that I would host and also win. And there’d be bonus points for anyone dressed as Princess Leia in the gold bikini but WITH the Leia buns because that is not correct but it IS how Rachel dressed in “The One With the Princess Leia Fantasy.”
I guess I’m organizing FriendsCon, you guys…
Or I guess you could go on the WB Tour and take these photos like I did and call it a day, but what’s the fun in that? (Well, a lot, actually, but the Con would be MORE fun!)
4. Saved By the Bell
I will say, as I’ve gotten older I’ve noticed more people than I thought are obsessed with Saved By the Bell. I was even on April Richardson’s Saved by the Bell podcast, “Go Bayside!” which you should definitely check out. The podcast is her and a guest and you watch an entire episode and then TALK ABOUT IT.
But okay, first of all just the cosplay as this Con would be incredible. I think I’ve seen enough spot-on Zack Morris Halloween costumes to know we can TURN IT OUT when it comes to SBTB cosplay. Secondly, we could have people singing the many songs that appear in Saved by the Bell, we could have people dressed as Max doing magic, and, I mean, the fan art. Oh, the fan art would be amazing.
5. Pretty Little Liars
Sure, I never know what season of Pretty Little Liars is on and their air schedule makes it feels like it’s never NOT on, but I am so into that show.
I would love to cosplay as Aria and just, you know, wear bonkers outfits. But I think the genius of this is how specific the cosplay would have to be to get it really right.
In a perfect world, we could play a huge murder mystery game with cell phones at some sort of masquerade ball and really feel like we’re INSIDE Pretty Little Liars and being haunted by A.
