Regina King made a major feminist pledge in her Golden Globes acceptance speech
All eyes were on Regina King at the 2019 Golden Globes. The actress took home the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in If Beale Street Could Talk, and during her acceptance speech she made a bold feminist pledge—and challenged others to do the same.
“In the next two years, everything that I produce, I am making a vow—and it’s going to be tough—to make sure that everything I produce is 50% women,” she said. “And I just challenge anyone out there who is in a position of power—not just in our industry, in all industries—I challenge you to challenge yourselves to stand with us in solidarity and do the same.”

Despite an illusory rise in ethnic and gender diversity in Hollywood, a recent report from the University of California showed that the number of women in speaking roles in major films has remained stagnant at around 30% in the last decade, and startlingly few of those actresses were women of color. So King’s pledge is not only still relevant, it remains essential.
