The Syrian refugee crisis now has a Kickstarter

Crowdfunding service Kickstarter has given thousands of people the perfect platform to promote their creative ideas, whether that be one of the world’s first commercially-available virtual reality helmets or a first attempt at making a potato salad. But this week, the company announced that it would be conducting what could be end up being its greatest undertaking, using the platform to promote the aspirations of millions of people.

In partnership with the White House and the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Kickstarter has launched a new, weeklong campaign to raise what will hopefully be millions to address the Syrian refugee crisis. Interested parties, which includes more than 14,300 backers as of Wednesday morning, can contribute any amount they want and it’s totally tax-deductable.

In the first 24 hours, the campaign exceeded its goal of raising $735,000, an amount of money that will help at least 3,000 refugees. Next up, Kickstarter and the UNHCR hope to reach $1.2 million in funding, or enough money to provide shelter, food, clothing, water, and other lifesaving goods for an additional 2,000 refugees.

“I immediately said, ‘yes’” Kickstarter CEO Yancey Strickler told The Guardian, adding that the company will also donate its 5 percent fee to the cause. “This is not something that we have ever done before. We have always kept the platform focused strictly on creative projects.”

And this could be the site’s most innovative, creative project yet.
