Reese Witherspoon discussed what it was like marrying Ryan Phillippe at age 23
In 1999, Reese Witherspoon stared in Cruel Intentions alongside Ryan Phillippe. The two fell in love on screen and off, and when she was only 23, Witherspoon married Phillippe. Witherspoon recently appeared on ITV’s Lorraine and opened up about her first marriage, as well as what it was like to have children in her mid-20s.
"I got married when I was 23 and I had two kids by the time I was 27," Witherspoon said. "I don’t know, sometimes it’s good to know yourself [first]."
The Home Again actress dated Phillippe for two years before they married. The couple had two children together — daughter Ava, 18, and son Deacon, 13 — before divorcing in 2006.
Witherspoon said on Lorraine that she “would never change anything,” but she has spoken to her daughter about waiting a bit longer to make a life decision as big as marriage. She said that 25 is an age when you start to know yourself a little better.

In 2011, Witherspoon married Jim Toth, and together they have a five-year-old son named Tennessee. Funnily enough, the actress’s latest film is about just that — starting fresh later in life.
Her character in Home Again separates from her husband and moves back to Los Angeles with her two daughters. This is where she meets a new (and younger) beau, and chaos ensues when her ex-husband shows up at her door.
"It’s about that next chapter in your life," Witherspoon continued. "What do you do when you get to 40 and you’ve made a decision when you were 25 to get married and have kids?"

Know yourself before committing to someone else is a great piece of advice. Witherspoon shows that no matter what path you take, you can learn from your choices and use that knowledge to grow.
