Reese Witherspoon is the number one choice to star in the Barbie origin story
Are you ready, Gigglers? Because I’m about to hit you with a ton of great news, all at once. First, Pacific Standard Films is creating a film called Barbie and Ruth that tells the story of Ruth Handler, the woman behind the Barbie doll, and how the beloved toy came to be. It’s like a superhero origin story, but for Barbies!
But wait, there’s more: Reese Witherspoon is the frontrunner for the role of Ruth. Um, yes please. I don’t have much influence in the Hollywood casting world, but I can say with 100% confidence that this NEEDS to happen. It’s a perfect fit!
Barbie and Ruth is based on the book Barbie and Ruth: The Story of the World’s Most Famous Doll and the Woman Who Created Her by Robin Gerber. The book was optioned into the movie by Pacific Standard Films — which Reese just so happens to own — and now the world will know Ruth Handler’s story. Also, mega props to Pacific Standard Films for their dedication to telling women’s stories.
Here’s the gist of the Barbie and Ruth tale: Ruth got the idea for Barbie when her daughter, Barbara, was playing with paper dolls that looked like infants. Ruth decided to create a more adult-looking toy, plus a line of accessories for her. The first Barbie was unveiled in 1959 at a toy fair, and the rest is history.
Now, not only are we super interested in learning more about the story of Barbie but we would L-O-V-E for our girl Reese to make that story come to life. We’re in. We hope Reese is too.
