This inspiring grandmother is redefining high-fashion beauty
The fact that the fashion industry has a diversity problem isn’t exactly groundbreaking. Not only are most models caucasian and thin, but they’re also very young. It’s extremely rare to see an older man or woman modeling runway beauty, and this restrictive, narrow representation of beauty is damaging. While we’re seeing progress (the recent campaigns with Joan Didion for Céline and Joni Mitchell for Saint Laurent are some awesome examples), we could definitely be a LOT more inclusive. Which is why Sasha Frolova (a photographer and actress from New York), decided to take things into her own hands and prove that beauty — particularly high-fashion beauty — has absolutely no age limit.
Using the most gorgeous lady in her life, Sasha took stunning portraits of her grandmother. She hired makeup artist Carson Stern to give her grandmother all the runway makeup looks seen around the world at shows like Marc Jacobs, Hood By Air, Altuzarra, Jeremy Scott, and more. The results are gorgeous, interesting, complicated and brilliantly creative.
Sasha told The Huffington Post, “On a very fundamental level, I wanted to make people think and feel. On a deeper level, I also wanted to address an issue I have grappled with personally for many years.” I hope she met her personal goal because she definitely got us thinking and feeling.
