“Black Panther” has grossed more than “Justice League” did in its entire run — and that’s just *one* record it shattered this weekend

Black Panther has finally arrived in theaters, and it’s official: Just about everyone saw it this weekend. Despite already-high expectations for the film — due to pre-sale tickets, critics’ reviews, and the fact that it’s a Marvel film — Black Panther stormed into theaters over Presidents’ Day weekend and shattered records left and right.

While the film was expected to rake in at least $170 million domestically over the weekend, it easily surpassed that number by bringing in $201.7 million from Friday to Sunday, with the holiday weekend numbers totaling $235 million in domestic sales. For perspective, Black Panther has grossed more domestically in its opening weekend than Justice League did during its entire run. Worldwide, Black Panther has currently grossed about $419 million.

With an opening weekend as dominant as Black Panther, the film proved (yet again) that films starring and directed by people of color are not only necessary, but also make a lot of money — hopefully finally putting that very tired myth surrounding bankable storytellers to rest. The Ryan Coogler-directed film has already pulled the impressive feat of making back its $200 million budget during its opening weekend, breaking so many records in the process. So what kind of box office records did Black Panther break?

It had the fifth biggest opening weekend of all time:

With $201.7 million domestically, Black Panther‘s opening weekend numbers were only outpaced by four films: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which holds the record at $248 million, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which opened to $220 million, Jurassic World, which had $208.8 million in sales, and The Avengers, which grossed $207.4 million during its opening weekend.

It had the second biggest four-day opener ever:

In its first four days, Black Panther officially slipped past Star Wars: The Last Jedi to have the second biggest four-day opener of all time, sitting behind only Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film, which sits comfortably close to the records for single day box office returns in its first four days in theaters — including a record for Monday returns — is showing no signs of slowing down.

And also became the film with the biggest Presidents’ Day weekend opening. Black Panther demolished the record set by Deadpool, which grossed $132 million during its February 2016 opening weekend.

With an incredible opening weekend, Black Panther easily became the biggest opening weekend for a black director. Coogler replaces Straight Outta Compton‘s F. Gary Gray from the top seat. Additionally, reports indicate that the film had the biggest opening weekend for any film with a predominantly black cast.

It is the best reviewed superhero film of all time:

The film, which boasts a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, currently stands as the best reviewed superhero film of all time, ahead of Iron Man and The Dark night, which each boast a *very* fresh score of 94%. While already the top live action superhero film, Black Panther sits just ahead of Disney’s animated superhero flick The Incredibles.
