So, this is the official reason there are no female Minions

Try as you might, you cannot escape the little yellow Minions right now. They are everywhere, and have taken over everything, including the box office this past weekend with a reported $115 million for their solo movie. You also might have noticed one other little thing about these guys: they are all, in fact, guys. All of them. Every single Minion is a dude. So where are all the lady Minions hiding?

In an interview with The Wrap, Minions creator (and director) Pierre Coffin explains there’s a reason we don’t see female Minions. Easy answer, they don’t exist. When he created the Minion world, he purposely didn’t include any girl Minions for one specific reason. Ready for it?

According to Coffin, the Minions are all guys because, “Seeing how dumb and stupid they often are, I just couldn’t imagine Minions being girls.” Ahh, good point. Female minions would never, ever, get into the situations these guy Minions fall into. And if there aren’t zany Minion situations happening, there is no Minions movie, and then no huge Minions opening weekend. Make sense.

It is, however, odd that a film creates a bunch of tiny little characters and none of them are female. Coffin keeps quiet when asked the age old question of, “where do Minions come from?” so we still might see some girl Minions later on down the road. But for right now, female Minions are MIA. Then again, would we really want to sit through a movie where female Minions are smart, organized, eloquent, strong, brave, fierce, sassy, along with loving and embracing their pill-shaped bodies?

Hmm. Yes, actually we would, Coffin. So get to work on that all-female Minions spinoff.
