Real life Hungry Hungry Hippos is a thing and it’s brilliant

It has come to our attention that super genius humans have been testing out different ways to play the classic game Hungry Hungry Hippos in a Wizard’s Chess kind of way — as in life-sized and action-packed. This week, an entertainer named Dean-O shared a video of a group of people who’d created a real life Hungry Hippos area out of skateboards, buckets, and tons of brightly colored balls. The video quickly went viral, racking up over a million views in two days. While Dean-O didn’t credit the family who came up with this absolutely brilliant idea, we salute them for their creativity.

The video jumps right into the ring: Four teams race to collect all the balls littered in the grass. Each team consists of one person on wheels and one person pulling their legs – it looks hilariously difficult. Luckily, it doesn’t seem like it would be too hard to put together a Human Hungry Hungry Hippos game of your own. One of the women in the video is gathering balls with a pot – doesn’t get more DIY than that!

The Internet has been developing Human Hungry Hungry Hippos for some time now. Two other videos show earlier versions of the set-up: in both, the “hippos” are controlled by ropes tied to their skateboards. Understandably, everyone on the floor is wearing a helmet.

In this one, things got pretty gnarly:

While in this one, they used balloons! I’d be terrified to roll over a bunch of them, but it looks comparable to the bouncy balls.

These are so awesome. Fingers crossed someone comes up with IRL Candyland next.
