Steven Spielberg’s “Ready Player One” just got a release date, and this is why we’re SO excited it’s officially happening
Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One is one of my favorite books published in the 21st century. It’s also one of my favorite books published, you know, ever. The novel, a hilarious and heart-pounding yarn set in a future virtual reality, is essentially The Matrix meets Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is just about the best A meets B I can think of.
The film rights to this book were snapped up literally the day the book sold, and for the next few years, us RP1 fans waited with bated breath for real news re: the film to materialize (you know Hollywood, they BUY a lot of stuff, they MAKE a lot less stuff).
Then, in March of this year we got some solid proof the film was a go: Steven Spielberg had signed on to direct! I was all ready to throw a parade when film geeks wiser and more cynical than me instructed me to slow my roll.
“Go check Steve’s IMDb page,” they said. “Steve is signed on to do a LOT of movies.”
I checked the IMDb, and saw that yes, in between all the directing and producing he’s doing, his plate is pretty full. But still, I never gave up hope. I mean, this was Ready Player One we were talking about. This book was destined to be a movie. It was going to happen. I just knew it.
Today, I am going to throw that damn parade, because, as Variety reports, Ready Player One has finally got its release date! December 15th, 2017, fan boys and fan girls, December 15th, 2017. That means we can go see it with our fams when we’re all holiday-hanging AND it could potentially be up for Oscar-type awards.
“Any film from Steven Spielberg is an event film, so it felt right to date this thrilling new project from one of our greatest filmmakers for the holiday season,” explained Warner Bros.’ president of domestic distribution, Dan Fellman, in a release.
Yes, this is over two years away, but us RP1 fans are used to waiting at this point. We can do another two years. At least the end, at long last, is in sight.
