Rashida Jones’ latest documentary centers on a music legend—her father

Rashida Jones’ newest Netflix project hits incredibly close to home. The Angie Tribeca star’s upcoming directorial and producing endeavor centers on the life of music legend (and her very own father) Quincy Jones. Quincy will offer “an intimate look at musical icon and influential legend” Quincy Jones, according to the streaming giant. Netflix released the first official trailer for the documentary today, September 6th.
With personal accounts by various famous faces (oh hey, Will Smith!) and archived footage, Quincy tells the story of the legendary record producer, film producer, and singer. Jones has been an indomitable force in pop culture for 70 years, and has mentored and worked alongside Michael Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Will Smith, Frank Sinatra, and (many) more. In short, he’s an icon. Quincy appears to take a deep dive into the visionary’s life, even touching on Jones’ cancer diagnosis.

The 85-year-old producer and singer was once married to actress and former model Peggy Lipton—who most recently appeared on the highly-anticipated Twin Peaks revival—and the couple had daughter Rashida in 1976.
While she’s well-known for her roles in front of the camera, this isn’t Jones’ first foray into directing and producing. The Parks and Recreation actress stars in and produces the TBS series Angie Tribeca, is a producer on the TNT cult-favorite Claws, and produced the hard-hitting Netflix documentary Hot Girls Wanted.
Quincy hits Netflix on Friday, September 21st.
