A rad DIY scrunchie to add some ‘90s cool to your look
The ‘90s are back in a big way, from television to nail polish. As someone who grew up in that decade, I completely get it—what’s not to love about Friends, neon and body glitter?
This week’s craft is a nod to the ‘90s, that quintessential accessory: the scrunchie. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’ve almost definitely worn ‘em. Me? I’m a fan. These so-retro hair bands are super easy to make, and look fantastic when you sew them with colorful or patterned fabrics. Stitch one up for yourself, then make a bunch to share with your besties!
Materials:
- Colorful fabric
- Thread in a corresponding color to the fabric
- 5/8-inch wide elastic
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Straight pins
- Safety pin
- Ballpoint pen
- Sewing machine
Craft away:
Measure and cut a 9 inch piece of elastic. Set it aside.
Use the ruler to draw a rectangle onto the wrong side of the fabric, 14 inches long by 3 1/2 inches wide. Cut out the rectangle.
Fold the rectangle in half, long end to long end, with right sides touching. Pin along the open edge of the fabric. Use the sewing machine to stitch along the pinned edge, keeping your stitches close to the edge of the fabric. You should now have a fabric tube.
Attach the safety pin to one end of the tube. Using the pin as a guide, flip the tube right side out.
Attach the safety pin to one end of the elastic, and guide it through the fabric tube, gathering the fabric as you go.
Layer the ends of the elastic over each other and stitch them in place to form a circle.
Roll the ends of the fabric tube back in on themselves to enclose the raw edges. One at a time, sew the ends of the fabric down through the elastic.
