You literally won’t believe how little money it cost to make A Quiet Place

Regardless of what the film’s title implies, John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place made noise at the box office its opening weekend and effortlessly clinched the number one spot. No seriously, A Quiet Place was *anything* but quiet.

It successfully bagged a whopping $50 million in ticket sales, making it the second-best domestic debut of the year, following superhero film Black Panther. If you include international earnings, the horror flick is sitting comfortably atop $71 million, an impressive feat considering it has only been out for a few days.

Not bad, Krasinski. Not bad at all!

In an era when movies often get bloated budgets of $100 million and more, it’s refreshing to see smaller films like A Quiet Place earn some serious bank.

And it’s all the more impressive when the thriller only cost a modest $17 million to make. 17 MILLION, PEOPLE. That means A Quiet Place has already made three times its budget during the opening weekend alone. Krasinski’s third directing effort stars Krasinski himself opposite IRL wife Emily Blunt, Millicent Simmonds, and Noah Jupe. It tells the story of a family living in a dystopian world ravaged by aliens, and they have to do everything to not make a sound…or risk getting eaten by the beastly creatures.

"We always knew we had something special from the first screenings. But you don’t get to a number like this without breaking free of the genre. I think this is about great storytelling," Kyle Davies, head of domestic distribution for Paramount, said in a statement. "We’re looking forward to what else he has up his sleeve."

Prior to its release, A Quiet Place already made buzz at the SXSW Film Festival, leading to applause from critics and a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. And now that the thriller has been showcased to the rest of the world, it welcomed a wave of celebrity endorsements (including praises from the king of horror Stephen King) and incredibly strong word of mouth. The original concept, of course, also played a huge part in the success of the film. Because, it’s not everyday audiences become thoroughly engrossed in a mostly silent horror picture.

Make sure to catch A Quiet Place in theaters, if you haven’t already, and chew your popcorn quietly while you’re at it.
