Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter opened up about having a miscarriage, and her story is powerful

It’s not often that we get to look into the private life of the British royal family, but this week, someone close to the queen shared something very personal. In a recent interview, Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall, opened up about having two miscarriages. It couldn’t have been easy for her to share her story, and her words are powerful.
Although Tindall, daughter of Princess Anne, has previously spoken about a miscarriage she had in 2016, in a new interview with The Sunday Times, she revealed that she had another before getting pregnant with her youngest daughter, Lena, who was born in June.
Tindall said that when it comes to subjects like miscarriages, “you don’t talk about it because it’s too raw,” but she said she’s ready now to talk about what she and her husband, Mike, went through when they lost a second baby.
“For me, the worst bit was that we had to tell everyone, everyone knew,” Tindall told the Times of her first miscarriage. “I had to go through having the baby because it was so far along. I then had another miscarriage really early on…In our case, it was something that was really rare; it was nature saying, ‘This one’s not right.’”
Tindall also went on to say that her husband and her older brother, Peter Phillips, came through for her when she needed them most.
“It was a time when my family came to the fore and I needed them,” she said.
Going through a miscarriage is never easy, and it’s hard to believe that in 2018, it’s still such a taboo topic. But the more people like Tindall share their experiences, the more comfortable women will feel talking about something that’s historically been loaded with shame.
