Celebs Share Their Emotional Reactions to the Passing of Queen Elizabeth
Harry Styles, The Spice Girls, and more pay tribute to the Queen on social media.
The world continues to mourn the life of Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away peacefully at Balmoral Castle on September 8th, 2022. Always a supporter of the humanities and the arts, Queen Elizabeth’s large circle of celebrity fans, dinner party guests, and lifelong friends have flooded social media with touching tributes to Her Majesty’s legacy.
Former President Barack Obama and Former First Lady Michelle Obama posted two images of times when they met the Queen, mentioning her significance in their lives.
“Michelle and I were lucky enough to come to know Her Majesty, and she meant a great deal to us,” he wrote. “Time and again, we were struck by her warmth, the way she put people at ease, and how she brought her considerable humor and charm to moments of great pomp and circumstance.”
Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney and Diana Ross
Musical legends Sir Elton John and Sir Paul McCartney left touching tributes on Instagram, and Diana Ross, who has previously performed for the Queen, created a video, stating, “I am happy I was able to say thank you to Her Majesty at this year’s Platinum Jubilee. With love and condolences to all of her family, we all celebrate her life.”
The Spice Girls
Several members of the Spice Girls posted tributes on Instagram as well. Check out this throwback pic posted by Mel B:
One of the most touching posts comes from Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton, who was knighted by the Queen this past December, and was inspired by his royal experience. “We talked about our shared love of dogs and she was incredibly generous with her time,” he writes.
Netflix is sure to receive a surge of subscribers rewatching The Crown for the star-studded portrayals of the monarch. However, only Dame Helen Mirren, who played Queen Elizabeth II in the 2006 film, The Queen, has posted a tribute stating she is “proud to be an Elizabethan.”
As their sovereign, Queen Elizabeth II had an impact on younger generations as well. Harry Styles asked fans during Madison Square Garden tour to join him “in a round of applause for her 70 years of service” to which the crowds enthusiastically obliged.
American country music star Maren Morris also posted a sweet musical tribute to the Queen on her Instagram account.
Even Paddington Bear, star of the adorable Platinum Jubilee opening video in which he shared a marmalade sandwich with Her Majesty, had a fond farewell:
More tributes are expected to come about as memorial services for Queen Elizabeth II are being prepared.
