The PS22 chorus just gave their teacher the most amazing gift. Pass the tissues.
The PS22 chorus, a choir of 60 – 70 students from Long Island, New York, have made headlines countless times with their absolutely stunning renditions of various popular songs, from Bastille’s “Pompeii” to Katy Perry’s “Roar”. They’ve also created heart-wrenchingly beautiful viral hits, such as their tribute to the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting back in 2012. And now, they’ve done it again, and it’s got us totally misty-eyed.
As part of an annual tradition, the kids generally perform a song with their director, Gregg Breinberg, for their very last practice. But this year, they did things a little differently: They sang Martina McBride’s “I’m Gonna Love You Through It” to a teacher, Adriana Lopez, who was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It was all caught on film, and it’s absolutely beautiful.
“. . .the last song of the year of the last practice, which is today, I always like to sing a song with the chorus,” Breinberg tells Lopez in the video, with his chorus students behind him. “But this year, we thought it would be a little extra special since we are so inspired by your fighting spirit, and we wanted to give something back to you.” And then, the children all launch into a chillingly beautiful cover of the song, which is about supporting someone who is battling cancer.
Lopez is visibly moved, wiping away her tears as the children sing together, holding up flowers for their beloved teacher. “Thank you so much,” Lopez chokes out through tears at the end of the song. “It means a lot to me.”
“I want to thank you for this special moment,” Lopez says, holding flowers with her arm around one of the students. “It was wonderful. And it’s not easy — it’s not easy. But I will get through it, because I have wonderful friends at the school.”
No, I’m not crying, YOU’RE crying. What a wonderful way to commemorate a great teacher who is dealing with such an immense obstacle — and with such beautiful talent. Our hearts are with Ms. Lopez during her battle, but it looks like she’s already got the support of the little ones at PS22.
