Did you notice this prop in every single ‘Fight Club’ scene?
Welcome to Fight Club. The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club. The second rule of Fight Club is: you use a Starbucks cup as a cinematic surprise. Let us explain.
As you’re watching Fight Club, you may notice many things. For one, you will probably notice Brad Pitt. That’s a given. You’ll notice the fighting and the blood and the explosions and the soap and the genius that is Helena Bonham Carter — but there is one thing that you may not notice. And that is the fact that there’s a Starbucks cup hidden in every single shot of the movie.
But really, this is actually a thing that’s part of your everyday Fight Club Trivia Night. In several interviews, David Fincher (the director) has mentioned that a Starbucks cup can be spotted in literally every single frame of his movie. Think of it as a Fincher-style “Easter egg.”
At the same time, you should know that this isn’t a random idea. It actually refers to a line in the movie: “When deep space exploration ramps up, it’ll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.” So, basically, Fincher is poking fun at Starbucks and their influence over the world culture. After all, isn’t there a Starbucks on every corner?
And it turns out that the coffeehouse is totally cool with all of this. Although, there is one exception. In the scene where a café is destroyed, the Starbucks logo in nowhere to be found. Apparently, it’s all fun and games until a giant art sculpture crashes through the window of an eatery. Then, all bets are off.
We’re beginning to realize that Fincher is a bit of a prankster because in his other movie, The Game, he does THE SAME EXACT THING. Except, in that movie, he switches out the infamous Starbucks cup for a can of haggis. This was meant to poke fun at cinematographer Harris Savides because his nickname is “Haggis.”
Now that all is said and done, we’re wondering: What other Easter eggs has Fincher hidden before our very eyes? Is there one in Gone Girl? What about The Social Network?! It looks like we’re going to have to re-watch these movies… for research purposes, of course.
