Priyanka Chopra revealed why it was an easy decision for her to take Nick Jonas’s last name
It’s been two months since Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas tied the knot, and the couple is still celebrating. It’s easy to see why—their whirlwind romance has been nothing short of a fairytale. As they’re settling into married life, Chopra has already made one big change: her last name. She now officially goes by Priyanka Chopra Jonas (it’s on her Insta bio, so you know it’s for real).
Considering Chopra is already well known by her maiden name, we’ve been curious what made her decide to change it. And according to what she said during the February 5th episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, it was actually a pretty simple decision.
“I always wanted to add his name to mine because I feel like we’re becoming family, and I’m a little traditional and old school like that,” Chopra told Fallon. “But I don’t take away my identity. He gets added to who I am.”
Okay, we LOVE that. We get that a lot of people certainly feel like taking a man’s last name is outdated—it’s 2019, and women don’t need to give up their identities when they get married.
But Chopra’s approach is really sweet. She’s not losing who she is, she’s just adding to who she is. Before, she was Priyanka Chopra, kickass actress and activist, and now she’s Priyanka Chopra Jonas, kickass actress, activist, and partner.
Of course, the choice to change your last name after marriage is a personal one. Some people may choose to keep their names, hyphenate, or choose an entirely new last name with their partner. But it’s nice to see that Chopra and Jonas did what was right for them and that they both seem happy about it.
