Princess Leia has a badass new title in ‘The Force Awakens’
When we next meet up with Leia Organa (née Skywalker, maybe with a new married name of Solo?) there will be none of this “your highness” business for our favorite princess. That’s because for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Leia is losing her princess title and picking up an even more kickass one: General.
With 35 days to go until The Force Awakens opens, more and more details about the movie are starting to come out. While the plot is still anyone’s guess, Entertainment Weekly caught up with Carrie Fisher and director J.J. Abrams to talk about one of our favorite characters, Princess Leia. Roughly 30 years have passed since the last time we saw her on screen, and while she’ll always be a blaster-wielding princess to us, now she’s a general calling the shots.
Abrams explained that her new title as General means that Leia’s all about business. “The stakes are pretty high in the story for her, so there’s not much goofing around where Leia’s concerned.”
Fisher echoed that comment, explaining that when we meet up again with her, she’s got a lot on her plate and is “Not easily dealing with it.” In Leia’s new position she’s “under a lot of pressure. Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine [she’s] feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed.”
Though this is all still purely speculation, it’d be safe to assume that Leia finds herself in a position of power within the Resistance (the group fighting the First Order). It wouldn’t be the first time Leia’s in some sort of command position with her group of rebels. In A New Hope she played an integral role in the destruction of the Death Star, and even took her fight to the battle field on both Tatooine and Endor in Return of the Jedi. So this promotion to General is simply the next logical step. She’s now the one who’s going to be our only hope.
But hope it’s OK if I still consider her my favorite Princess.
