Princess Diana stopped wearing her signature blue eyeliner for this reason

For years, Princess Diana was known for wearing a swipe of blue eyeliner on her lower lash line, but one day, the look seemed, abruptly, to be gone. According to a new interview published by Yahoo Beauty, it turns out she was never ordered to stop wearing the blue accent, but instead dropped the look from her beauty arsenal simply because her makeup artist thought she looked “prettier” in “beiges and browns.”

“I think beiges and browns are just so much prettier. Simple as that,” said Mary Greenwell, Diana’s one-time makeup artist.

And honestly? We’re not mad about it. Princess Di, who died tragically 20 years ago on August 31st, looked positively regal at all times, and her subtler eye makeup perfectly complemented her fashion-forward ensembles.

Ultimately, the change suited Diana, and made her blue eyes pop even more.

But the blue was pretty fab, and we can’t help but feel a bit nostalgic when we see photos like this one.

Or this one, showing a subtler variation on the blue liner.

It’s worth noting, too, that Princess Diana mostly donned this look in the ’80s, when everyone and their mama was rocking blue eye makeup.

Interestingly, today’s celebrity beauty mavens seem to have adopted Diana’s blue under-eye streak en masse, with everyone from Olivia Munn to Janelle Monáe wearing variations on the look.

We’re sure Diana would be glad to know she started this — among many other — trends.

Even though it’s been 20 years since we lost her, we still feel heavy-hearted over her death and will continue to honor her for the incredible woman, mother, and humanitarian she always showed herself to be.
