Princess Beatrice Wore the Queen’s Vintage Dress for Her Small Royal Wedding

That tiara is EVERYTHING.

In case you missed it because of, I don’t know, anything else major going on in the world right now, there was a royal wedding this past weekend. British royal family member Princess Beatrice married Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi. The couple got married in a small, private ceremony, which means we don’t know much about this wedding besides the most important part: what Princess Beatrice’s wedding dress looks like.

The royal family shared photos from the big day on its official Instagram account. But, because the wedding was private, it’s just a few snaps of the newlyweds following the ceremony. Thankfully, though, the account provides information about Beatrice’s outfit.

Princess Beatrice’s wedding dress and tiara were both borrowed from her grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II—with some modern updates.

Beatrice had updates made to a Norman Hartnell dress Queen Elizabeth wore to the premiere of Lawrence of Arabia in 1962 and to the opening of Parliament in 1967. (You can check out the Queen in the dress here.) As you can see, Beatrice had puffy sleeves added and the hem of the skirt was changed. The puff sleeves are on-trend right now, and the change also made her dress share a connection with the one her mother, Sarah Ferguson, wore for her wedding in 1986

Along with the dress, Beatrice wore the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, which Queen Elizabeth wore on her own wedding day in 1947. I mean, if you’re allowed to borrow it, then I guess you don’t turn that down.

As reported by People, the wedding was held at All Saint’s Chapel in Windsor and was attended by 20 friends and family members. These included Queen Elizabeth; Prince Phillip; Mapelli Mozzi’s son from a previous relationship; Beatrice’s parents, Ferguson and Prince Andrew; and her sister, Princess Eugenie. Eugenie, who was married in a televised wedding in 2018, shared some well wishes for her sister on Instagram.

The wedding might have been private—which is for the best for both personal and pandemic reasons—but royal fans still got a history lesson told through vintage clothing.
