Prince William and Prince Harry are opening up about Princess Diana as a mom for the first time, and we’re tearing up over here
It’s hard to believe that this August will mark 20 years since the death of Princess Diana. Now, for the first time, Prince William and Prince Harry are opening up about what she was like as a mother. The upcoming HBO documentary Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy, will offer a more personal look at their special mother-son relationships.
The trailer, which shows Prince William and Prince Harry looking through family photo albums, has us tearing up. It is so special to see them talk about Princess Diana in such a way.
Prince William was 15 and Prince Harry was 12 when their mother died in a tragic car accident in August of 1997. Her death thrust them even more into the public eye. They have only recently begun to publicly discuss what the impact of losing a parent so young had on them. Earlier this year, they talked about her death with Kate Middleton on Facebook Live.
Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy will be the first time that they have opened up about her as a mother. Because they are big advocates of mental health, it is refreshing to see them come together to share some happy memories. A preview trailer for the documentary shows them reflecting on her fondly.
"This is the first time the two of us have ever spoken about her as a mother. She was very informal and really enjoyed the laughter and the fun," William, dad to Prince George and Princess Charlotte, says with a smile in his voice. "She understood that there was a real life outside of palace walls."
They also reminisce about her big, infectious laugh, and how she was always up to have fun.
"She was our mum. She still is our mum. And of course, as a son I would say this, she was the best mum in the world," Harry says at the end of the trailer.
If the trailer’s video clip of Princess Diana giving her boys a big hug is any indication, he’s absolutely right. Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Legacy premieres on HBO later this month.
