Prince Harry speaks out about racism in Meghan Markle’s British Vogue issue

Prince Harry just got real about racism. The Duke of Sussex interviewed anthropologist Jane Goodall for Meghan Markle’s guest-edited issue of British Vogue, and while their candid conversation focused mainly on the environment and Harry’s family, the pair eventually discussed racism, too.

The topic hits close to home for Harry, because Markle, who is mixed-race, has been subject to racist criticism since the couple first started dating. In the interview, Harry called out the unconscious biases that people might not realize are tainting their views of others.

"Despite the fact that if you go up to someone and say, “What you’ve just said, or the way that you’ve behaved, is racist—they’ll turn around and say, “I’m not a racist. “I’m not saying that you’re a racist, I’m just saying that your unconscious bias is proving that, because of the way that you’ve been brought up, the environment you’ve been brought up in, suggests that you have this point of view—unconscious point of view—where naturally you will look at someone in a different way. And that is the point at which people start to have to understand."

Goodall agreed with Harry’s point, saying, “Kids are taught to hate. They’re actually taught to hate.”

This isn’t the first time Prince Harry has spoken out about racism. Kensington Palace previously called out the unfair criticism of Markle in an official statement to the public on behalf of the duke.

“His girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public – the smear on the front page of a national newspaper; the racial undertones of comment pieces; and the outright sexism and racism of social media trolls and web article comments,” the statement reads.

It continues by saying that Prince Harry was “worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.”

Critics aside, lots of people applaud and celebrate the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s historic stamp on the royal family. As for us, we’ll never stop cheering them on.
