Watch how “Hamilton” and “The Color Purple” honored Prince last night and try not to cry
Yesterday, the world shook with the sudden death of music icon Prince and last night, Broadway stars from Hamilton and The Color Purple brought down their respective houses when, at the end of their shows, they honored Prince by performing of some of his best-known songs.
The Color Purple posted a video to Facebook featuring Jennifer Hudson, Cynthia Erivo, and the rest of the cast of the musical singing a cover of “Purple Rain.” The video has been shared over 2.2 million views– probably because it’s enough to send chills down our spines. J-Hud truly has an incredible voice.

The cast of Hamilton also remembered Prince last night in their own beautiful way with a fun, happy, live rendition of Prince’s “Let’s Go Crazy”. Hamilton star Lin-Manual Miranda read some of the song lyrics to the audience before the cast burst into a dance-off onstage:
They really made sure to have a total blast, because let’s be honest — that’s exactly what Prince would have wanted.
Nobody, perhaps, put it quite as eloquently as Lin-Manuel Miranda on Twitter:
And really, what more could we ask? Thank you to the cast of Hamilton and The Color Purple for reminding us how we should truly be honoring Prince — together, with song.
