‘Pretty Little Liars’ Is Being Rebooted by ‘Riverdale’ Showrunner Only 3 Years After It Ended

“A” is back to wreak havoc on another small-town group of teenagers. Only three short years after its series finale aired on Freeform, Pretty Little Liars is getting a reboot from Riverdale showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. Do we need this? Probably not. But because Pretty Little Liars was basically a women-driven Riverdale before Riverdale existed, color us intrigued. Here’s what we know so far.
According to sources in a Hollywood Reporter story, Aguirre-Sacasa’s Pretty Little Liars reboot won’t be centered on Aria Montgomery, Spencer Hastings, Hanna Marin, Emily Fields, Alison DiLaurentis, and Mona Vanderwaal.
Instead, the new PLL reboot will focus on new characters and an entirely new story.
In good news (sorry fans, but) this is a perfect opportunity to erase problematic teacher Ezra Fitz from the storyline. In sad news, this means that the icon Mona Vanderwaal won’t be making another return. (No one could do it like Janel Parrish anyway.)
The report also notes that, while no network is attached yet, it seems like HBO Max is the target for the new show. Right now, there’s no indication that the OG Pretty Little Liars showrunner, I Marlene King, is attached to the project in any way. We do hope that any reboot continues the women-driven achievement of the original show, especially given it now has a male showrunner.
The PLL series finale aired in 2017, and, since then, it’s had a sequel spinoff, The Perfectionists, which transformed Alison and Mona into the “adults” in the room with a new cast of teenagers. However, The Perfectionists was canceled in September 2019 after only one season.
For a series that was so much about coming back from the dead—”Did you miss me?”—in a weird way, it seems appropriate for Pretty Little Liars to get such a quick rebirth. That’s immortality, my darlings.
