How to prepare for Winter Storm Quinn if you live in New York City

Well, it looks like Punxsutawney Phil was right. He predicted six more weeks of winter for 2018, and Mother Nature is delivering. Just when the effects of bomb cyclone Winter Storm Riley were all but gone, another nasty nor’easter is moving in. Get ready for Winter Storm Quinn NYC. Here’s what you can expect and how to prepare.

Last week’s Winter Storm Riley bought tons of rain and heavy wind to the Big Apple. It was pretty light on snow; NYC only experienced a slushy wintery mix for a few hours. But this nor’easter has other ideas for the city. The Weather Channel reports that Winter Storm Quinn could bring up to six inches of snow to NYC. It’s going to start raining on the evening of Tuesday, March 6th. And overnight, that rain will turn into snow, which will continue all day Wednesday.

If you love the snow, then you’re in luck! There should be a sizeable accumulation for all of your snow angel needs. But in a big city like New York, snow also means slippery sidewalks, delayed trains, and grumpier-than-usual New Yorkers. Plus, those pesky deceptively deep puddles at the edge of crosswalks that are always MUCH deeper than they look. Those are the worst.

So, how can you prepare for Winter Storm Quinn if you live in New York City?

You can start by stocking up on the essentials. Make sure you have enough food and water for the rest of the week. And it can’t hurt to have other storm items too like flashlights, backup batteries, and candles, just in case the power goes out. It shouldn’t go out in New York City, but you never know. It can’t hurt to be prepared.

If you live in New York City, make sure you have a plan to salt and shovel outside of your apartment.

Hopefully, your landlord will be on the ball. But they probably have multiple properties to attend to. If they can’t make it to yours right away, be careful on the steps!

Above all else, just try to stay inside until Winter Storm Quinn blows over. But if you want to build a snowman or a snow fort, we won’t stop you.
