Just a list of powerbesties we love and cannot get enough of
You’ve heard of power ballads, and powerhouses, and probably even powerlifting. . . .But what about powerbesties? Because that’s a thing, you know. And it’s a beautiful, infinitely wonderful thing. The term “powerbesties” is essentially the amazing friendship union between two well-known, talented, and dynamic individuals. Taylor Swift and Lena Dunham’s glorious and endlessly adorable best friendship is a pivotal example by what me mean when we say “powerbestie.”
These ladies are basically ruling the world right now — T-Swift with her incredible new album (and her Halloween costume, obviously), and Lena Dunham with GIRLS, her book, and basically just about anything she puts out in the world. These two are showing the world what it looks like when influential, famous people join friendship forces and take over the media (and our hearts).
Just look at what Tay recently said on David Letterman in regards to the beginning of her friendship with L-Dog (I can call them that because I am actually trying to make it into their powerbestie club):
“I was watching Girls when it first came out about two years ago and I just thought, ‘She’s so empowering. This person writes, directs and stars in this incredible show.’ So I did what you do when you’re interested in someone: I Googled her and went to her Twitter and the first thing I saw was her quoting my lyrics. At first I thought, ‘She has to be doing that ironically. She’s clearly making fun of me.’ I have this big loser complex from school. But it turned out she was following me and it was completely unironic and she actually liked my music. She direct messaged me and she said, ‘We need to be best friends. I feel like you’ve been my best friend in my head for months and almost year now, so I need to see you in person and I will lavish you with compliments in person.’ And she did do that. And we’ve been best friends ever since.”
That right there is a powerbestie™. And because we’re so moved by the dynamo that is Swiftham™ (their celeb nickname we just made up and copyrighted, by the way), we wanted to point out some other powerbesties we admire:
1. Mindy Kaling and B.J. Novak
These two, talented besties are all over Twitter, lovingly teasing one another and promoting each others’ projects (shows, books, you name it —these creative geniuses are uber prolific, and they are constantly involved in each other’s professional endeavors). Even though Mindy and B.J. were once a romantic item, they now just love each other as friends. And it’s super adorbz.
2. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler
This powerbestfriendship has been going on for over 20 years, starting at an improv class at Chicago’s Improv Olympic. Holland Taylor, who worked with both women, told Parade, “They’re absolutely peas in a pod. They adore each other. They’re like sisters. They’re like Scottie and Westie puppies in a basket.” There’s even an entire article on the history of their friendship. You’re welcome.
3. Jaden Smith and Kylie Jenner
Rumors fly about these teens dating, and whether or not that’s true, it’s safe to say these two are definitely BFFs. Kylie even stars in his latest music video, so watch for yourself and decide if this is a powerbestie or a powercouple.
4. Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell
These Pretty Little besties are so close, they have their own hashtag (#ButtahBenzo). Now that’s a power move.
5. Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox
I feel like these two are a classic example of a television show bringing two powerful people together and then never letting them go. Will we ever get sick of Monica and Rachel’s IRL bestie-ness? NEVER.
6. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake
Does anything bring you closer than making an Apple commercial together? Probably not. These two just have the best time together and I dare you to try and count the amount of times JF has had JT on his show (it will take too long, don’t bother).
7. George Clooney and Brad Pitt
I should be annoyed that they’ve been in so many movies together (Burn After Reading, Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen) but I simply don’t have it in me because they’re so adorable and perfectly epic together.
8. Natalie Portman and Rashida Jones
Sorry, guys, there is too much gorgeousness in this powerbestie friendship, you’re gonna have to break up. OK fine, you can stay together. Natalie told XFinity, “[Rashida] would fight beasts 10 times her size to protect the people she loves. She is the kind of friend who can sub in and love you through the times when you can’t necessarily love yourself.” We love this.
9. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck
Q: Do you like apples? A: Well we’re besties! HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES? These two have been pals since childhood so they might win the longevity powerbestie award. Hooray!
