Portia de Rossi revealed why all those Ellen DeGeneres divorce rumors make her feel “accepted”
Both Portia de Rossi and her wife, Ellen DeGeneres, have long been champions for the LGBTQ community; DeGeneres even came out on her own show in the ’90s. But that doesn’t mean the two haven’t faced judgement and scrutiny themselves. In an interview this week, de Rossi opened up about the way her marriage has been perceived in recent years, and she revealed something surprising: She believes that the divorce rumors that have plagued her and DeGeneres are actually a sign that society is moving in the right direction.
While talking to Us Weekly on June 27th, de Rossi said that as soon as she and DeGeneres saw that tabloids were churning out fake divorce rumors about them, she knew that things were finally changing in a positive way.
“The divorce rumors came and then we really knew the perceptions had changed,” she told the magazine. “I’m not kidding. I know it sounds ridiculous, but when that started happening I thought, ‘Oh, now we’re finally accepted.’ We get the same shit as every celebrity couple.”
Thinking about it that way, she has a point. Rumors that you and your spouse are getting divorced aren’t necessarily what anyone wants to deal with, but being treated like any other celebrity couple is oddly a sign of acceptance.
“I thought, ‘Wow, this is great that I’m pregnant, not pregnant, divorced, not divorced, whatever. That means there is an acceptance for this,” she said.
It’s wonderful, of course, that de Rossi feels seen and accepted. And we certainly have come a long way in advancing LGBTQ equality in this country. But there’s still so much work to be done, and we’re glad to have people like DeGeneres and de Rossi along for for the fight.
And for the record, we’re really glad that none of those divorce rumors were true. We don’t want to live in a world without these two living happily ever after.
