A popular parenting blogger and her husband are divorcing because he’s gay, but their commitment to their family and each other is inspiring

It’s been a long time coming for the Smokler family. But after years of soul searching, the couple has decided to end two decades of marriage. Mommy blogger Jill Smokler announced she is divorcing on her Facebook page March 4. And, although it’s absolutely heartbreaking, the family is remaining strong.

After 23 years of struggling with his sexuality, her husband Jeff is finally comfortable with coming out as gay. It can be a scary reality, as many know too well. And we absolutely commend Jeff for being bravery and living his truth.

The “Scary Mommy” founder shared some of the details online, including their decision to tell their children exactly why the couple was divorcing.

Jeff Smokler also opened up about his two decade long battle on social media.

According to US Weekly, he said, "Of course I always knew I was different. But, when you meet your soulmate when you’re 18 years old — only five years older than my own daughter is now. And that person is a woman, you simply think 'thank God then, I can’t be gay.'"

Jeff went on to say how coming out wasn’t an easy choice. But, it was something he had to do for his own health, and the well being of his family. He said once he came to terms with his sexuality, he knew that he had to make a choice. He could either neglect his true self and live with the consequences of pushing down his emotions forever. Or, he could come out and live his truth surrounded by his family.

The couple also stated that they’re going to remain friends, and will put their family first.

And with everything they’re going through, it’s beautiful to hear what their priorities are.

Since making the announcement, the mommy blogger has shared their story with the numerous news outlets. And they have received a ton of support from those all over the web. For every negative comment the family gets, an influx of positive ones follows. And that’s so awesome to hear.

It definitely sounds like a complicated situation to go through. But, we’re wishing the family nothing but the best.
