This pop group is entirely made up of rad Japanese grandmas

Listen, we’re not here to tell you what to do and who to love, but we really need you to love these amazing Japanese grandmas who are all members of a pop group — a real, bonafide pop group.

KBG84 is a pop group made up of 33 super fun grandmas from Kohima Island in Okinawa, Japan. The ladies are all over the age of 80 (the oldest being three years shy of 100) — and they are teaching us that it’s never too late to live out our dreams!

The band has recorded an album and even taken their show on the road — performing for sold-out crowds all over Japan. They are famous in their homeland, and have been referred to as “icons”, but one 92-year-old member wasn’t even sure what that meant.

“When I first heard someone call us ‘idols,’ I thought an idol meant someone who had lived a long life and was at the gates of heaven,” Tomi Menaka told AFP. “But in Tokyo they told me it was an entertainer – which was a relief because I thought it meant I was on my way to heaven. I hadn’t even been to Tokyo or Osaka. I wanted to go there before I went to heaven.”

The group has released a video to their song, “Come on and Dance, Kohama Island” — and it’s fantastic. The video was shot on the tiny tropical island they live on.

“We felt like stars in Tokyo,” 86-year-old Hideko Kedamori said. “Everyone in the audience had a big smile, which gave us the energy to sing our hearts out. We’re blessed to have been born in Kohama. Our lyrics are about the island and nature – whales in the sea spouting or dolphins doing somersaults.”

Menaka, who is thought of us the group’s leader, said that when she performs, she is at her happiest. “Going to Tokyo for the first time, I thought I was so lucky to be born,” Menaka said. “I got to meet my grandchildren. I’ll never forget it. I was moved to tears.”

KBG84 has given all the women in the band the opportunity to travel and meet family members they otherwise would never have met. Music really does bring people together!
