How to play fantasy football when you don’t know anything about football

The fall means different things to different people. For some, it means beautiful fashion in killer coats and stylish boots, and for others, it means football season. That’s right, on September 8th, NFL football returns and people head back to the sports bars to watch their favorite team and drink some beers. I was NEVER into watching football unless there was like a party to go along with it, but as soon as I started playing fantasy football, I was hooked.

If you don’t have a favorite team, you can still join by playing fantasy football, and really, very little football knowledge is required.

In fantasy football, you basically pick a team made up of real players, and based on how they do in the real game, they get points. Your team faces another team in your fantasy league each week, and the team with the highest points after all of the games wins. All you need is to know a TEENY bit about each position.

Quarterbacks throw the ball!

He will get you LOTS of points, so you definitely want to get a good one. But don’t worry, there’s lots of good Quarterbacks, so I usually wait a little into the draft before I nab one.

Running Backs run really fast.

They usually also make a lot of touchdowns. AND good Running Backs are hard to find, so I always like to take a good one in the early rounds.

Wide Receivers catch the ball!

They also get lots of touchdowns. Wide Receivers are definitely my favorite, because when they make good catches it’s just SO cool. I usually nab a couple of great ones. Like at my draft the other day, I got Odell Beckham Jr. from the pic above, who is basically one of the best in the whole league.

You’ll know it’s a touchdown, because players do a funny little dance!

Tight Ends are big strong dudes.

Oooo, abs… What were we talking about? Right, football.

We still don’t really get what they do different from Wide Receivers, but you have to have one, so get one who scores a lot of touchdowns. Rob Gronkowski (the man connected to the abs above) is my fave, because he is CRAZY good and also adorably hilarious, so get him if you can.

Kickers are pretty self explanatory. They’re also not as cute as these guys:

The Defense tackles people. Also occasionally do silly dances.

Now that you know the basic positions, it’s time to draft!

During the draft, you get to pick your team. You have a specific order, and you pick one player at a time. The strategy is to get the best player you can in each round, but you have to make sure that you get enough of each kind of player. Usually, you get to pick about 15 players total. Oh, and don’t forget to give your team an adorable name and mascot!

Then, you’re ready to go out there and play some football!
