We’ve got a first look at Pixar’s newest film, and we’re already in love

As we wait for the release of Toy Story 4, and the Incredibles 2, and Cars 3, Pixar isn’t going to leave us hanging. Instead, they’re going to introduce us to a whole new world of wonder and amazement with the studio’s upcoming film, Coco. While many details about the new film are still tightly locked away in Pixar’s Vault of Cool Stories (not a real thing, we just made that up) the first few details about the film have slipped out, and we are suddenly SO excited to check this out.

Our friends over at Entertainment Weekly got this first scoop, and here’s what you need to know: Coco won’t have any sort of anthropomorphic toys, or superheroes, or cars, and instead, a young 12-year-old Mexican boy named Miguel who loves music.

However, his family does not love music, since they are shoemakers, and are a “music-hating household.” Actually, the family believes they were cursed by music, when “Miguel’s great-great-grandfather abandoned his wife decades earlier to follow his own dreams of performing, leaving  [Miguel’s great-great-grandmother] to take control as the matriarch of the now-thriving [family] line and declare music dead to the family forever.”

Oh. Well, that’s a little intense for a Disney movie huh? The story actually gets MORE intense from there, as Miguel accidentally discovers a way to enter the Land of the Dead. There, he meets some of his family’s spirits and tries to “earn his family’s blessing to perform, and return to the Land of the Living before time runs out.”

This story is clearly full of Mexican heritage, and the filmmakers were determined to have an all-Latino cast. They succeeded in doing — currently, Benjamin Bratt and Gael García Bernal play two of the leads, with newcomer Anthony Gonzalez voicing Miguel.

And while it’s one thing to talk about the story, do you now want to SEE IT? Only one image from the movie has been released, but it’s a good one with Miguel and his great-grandmother. Long-time Pixar director, Lee Unkrich tweeted it out earlier today:

Are you excited? We’re excited. Only downside is we’ve still got to wait a little bit for Coco, but not too long. The movie hits theaters on June 16th, 2017.
