Why ‘Pitch Perfect 2’ Might Be Better Than the Original
I saw Pitch Perfect on a sad Friday night after a really busy and tiring week and it was the BEST pick-me-up I’d ever experienced. I fell instantly in love with all of the characters and the songs and everything and to no one’s surprise began talking about the movie to everyone (and singing everything, aca-obviously). I can’t even talk or think about the Barden Bellas’ (but really I just care about Beca) performance at the end and Jesse’s response without getting chills. (I seriously wish this was a joke but it is not. I JUST got chills.)
Anyway, usually when a movie is great I want more and more and more of it. But there have been some less-than-perfect sequels made of some pretty good movies (Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality, I’m looking at you right now). And for that reason, I’m glad we don’t have a Mean Girls 2, you know? But when Pitch Perfect 2 was announced, I actually felt tentative excitement! (Fellow Star Wars fans you might feel the same way regarding what’s currently being filmed.)
The movie ended at a place where I could see there being more story – more competitions and more mash-ups and more everything! I love all the characters and, really, there have been so many new songs since then that those opportunities are endless! Whew! I mean, Miley Cyrus alone has COMPLETELY different songs than “Party in the USA” now!
But then it was announced Elizabeth Banks was directing it and besides wanting to support as many female directors as possible I also just really love Elizabeth Banks and can’t wait to see what she brings to the sequel. Obviously the biggest concern is that your favorites are back so luckily we know Anna Kendrick, Brittany Snow and Rebel Wilson (and Elizabeth Banks) will be there, but then we found out that Adam Devine was coming back which is all sorts of exciting. (How will he be incorporated? How did L.A. go???)
But then we get to NEW CAST MEMBERS. So far Hailee Steinfeld has joined the cast as a Bella which is so exciting because she was just incredible in True Grit but then…

Look, I don’t watch Sons of Anarchy but I did watch Married With Children (which is the best!) and Futurama and 8 Simple Rules and I’m obsessed with Katey Sagal. She’s just brilliant and she’ll be playing Hailee Steinfeld’s mom. And I mean, she already played Artie’s mom on Glee so I’m pretty ready for this. (Also he and Hailee could definitely be related so this all makes a lot of sense, casting-wise.)
I’ll be MOST excited when the movie gets “Pitch Perfect 2 Indeed!” headlines rather than “Pitch Less-Than-Perfect 2” headlines. Also, those are both terrible headlines so I hope neither happens.
