A photo of Puerto Rican doctors performing surgery with flashlights is circulating the internet, and it’s heartbreaking

Despite the fact that Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico almost a month ago, the U.S. territory is still suffering — greatly. Per a photo that is currently going viral, doctors are performing surgery on the island by flashlight. And the reality is both infuriating and heartbreaking.

Former governor of Puerto Rico Alejandro Garcia Padilla tweeted the image with the caption: "This is what POTUS calls a 10! Surgery performed with cellphones as flashlights in Puerto Rico today."

Padilla’s comment, “This is what POTUS calls a 10!” refers to how, when asked how he feels he has handled the crisis in Puerto Rico on a scale of one to ten, Trump said, “I give ourselves a ten.”

As of five days ago, more than 80 percent of residents were still without power and hundreds of thousands still don’t have access to running water, per the Guardian. Many roads remain closed, preventing Puerto Ricans from attempting to rebuild their lives.

Despite Puerto Rico’s continuing struggles, Trump has made it clear that he will not provide support indefinitely.

He said: “…We cannot keep FEMA, the Military & the First Responders, who have been amazing (under the most difficult circumstances) in P.R. forever!”

Luckily, there might be more aid coming to Puerto Rico soon. According to the Chicago Tribune, the Senate passed a measure that would send $36.5 billion in relief funds to the territory. Now, it’s just waiting on a signature from Trump.

If you would like to help Puerto Rico, you can donate to a variety of organizations, including:

1. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)

2. First Lady of Puerto Rico Beatriz Rosselló’s “Unidos Por Puerto Rico” fund

3. Salvation Army

4. Various GoFundMe campaigns

5. GlobalGiving’s Puerto Rico & Carribean Relief Fund

6. Hispanic Federation

We hope this situation improves soon and that Puerto Rico gets the support it needs. The current reality is unacceptable.
