There’s a petition to bring McDreamy back, you guys!
I have been a Grey’s Anatomy fan since the beginning. The pilot aired in 2005 and was the single most anticipated TV event in my dorm room. From then on I watched every twist and turn and cried SO hard so many times. I’ll be the first to admit that the show has been a little hit or miss in the most recent — ahem — seasons BUT all of that changed last Thursday night when our heart, our soul, our love, McDreamy, was in a massive accident involving a tractor trailer . . . and he died. Last Thursday’s episode was the signature gut-wrenching, heart-breaking, music-filled Shonda drama that I LOVE. And no one is over it.
You better believe that when “Chasing Cars” started playing my already-crying face turned into a full-blown sob coupled with a “WHYYYYYYYYY.” Not only is that the song they played when Denny died, but it’s also just a SUPER SAD song.
Fans on social media were outraged — so much so that there is now a petition on Change.org to try to save McDreamy. Here’s a little snippet from the petition (which already has over 72,000 supporters, BTW). Prepare for some harsh language because people are UPSET:
“You cannot have people invest a DECADE into a character and then you just terminate them like that! You have people out here donating blood and organs trying to save lives, wanting to become doctors and all from committing to this television show…just to let us down like this. You’ve destroyed us. COMPLETELY”
“We would have been better off hating Derek thinking he was cheating on Meredith than for you to just kill him off. I would rather hate him thinking he is an adulterer than have him dead!”
And then it gets even more — impassioned (yes, that’s possible):
“It’s like you’ve killed the President of Grey’s Anatomy! The Fans are ready to serve you papers and charge you with the Patriot Act! You HAVE TO BRING DEREK BACK! NOW! IMMEDIATELY! What is Meredith going to do?! What is Zola and baby Bailey going to do!?!?!?!?!?!!?!? Did you NOT think about the kids?!”
I repeat, there are 70K+ signatures, you guys. Are you gonna sign?
Perhaps because I read all the articles about Patrick Dempsey supposedly leaving before his contract was up, I did not find killing him off shocking. I cried like I was dying myself, but I wasn’t terribly surprised. I mean, come on, we had an episode where Meredith was just reminiscing about their perfect love the whole time, someone had to die. It was just too good to be true.
